5202 Initial Substitute Teacher Training
18 Clock Hours

This course provides a review of the laws and policies that govern teaching in West Virginia. The student will learn specific procedures to obtain his/her initial Substitute Teacher Permit according to West Virginia Policy 5202. The student will be provided with information about teaching and classroom management.

Registration is open throughout the year. The online portion of the course is self-paced within CPE term dates (current dates are listed at the bottom of this page) and must be completed before doing the required classroom observations).

Completion of this course AVERAGES FOUR WEEKS; however, a student can complete at any time before the end of the term date.

Certificate of Completion will be issued electronically when all requirements are met and authorized by the instructor. Certificate of Completion must be renewed every three years.

Requirements to Receive a Certificate of Completion

  • According to WV Policy 5202, students must spend 14 clock hours online reading course material and completing quizzes with at least an 80% score on each quiz (with three attempts to pass).

  • According to WV Policy 5202, students must spend four (4) clock hours of classroom observations in specified grade levels within the WV Public School System. (Observations must be completed to receive a certificate of completion – no exceptions.)

  • Students must have a four-year degree in any subject.

  • Students are required to have college transcripts and a current TB Test (for local county Board of Education).

Renewal Substitute Teacher Training
12 Clock Hours

This course provides a review of classroom management strategies, instructional strategies, and general information that was covered in the initial 5202 Substitute Teacher Training. Students will learn specific procedures to renew your 5202 Substitute Teacher Permit.

Registration is open throughout the year. The online portion of the course is self-paced within CPE term dates (current dates are listed at the bottom of this page) and must be completed before doing the required classroom observations).

Completion of this course AVERAGES TWO TO THREE WEEKS; however, a student can complete at any time before the end of the term date.

Certificate of Completion will be issued electronically when all requirements are met and authorized by the instructor. Certificate of Completion must be renewed every 3 years.

Requirements to Receive a Certificate of Completion

  • Students must have an active Substitute Teacher Permit to take the Renewal course.

  • According to WV Policy 5202, students must spend nine (9) clock hours online reading course material and completing quizzes with at least an 80% score on each quiz (with three attempts to pass).

  • According to WV Policy 5202, students must do three (3) clock hours of classroom observations in specified grade levels within the WV Public School System. (Observations must be completed to receive a certificate of completion – no exceptions.)

  • Students must have a four-year degree in any subject.
