Self-Assessment Instructions for Chinese Classes

Step 1

Does the student speak any Chinese at all? If not, then start with an age appropriate class -- Chinese for Preschoolers 4-5 years old or Parent and Child Chinese for Beginners class if the student is 2-4 years old (parent must take the class together with the child). If the child does not meet the age for either of those classes, refer to the self-assessment in Step 2.

Step 2

If the student is school age but you are not sure which level of Chinese is best, take a look at the self-assessment. The whole list is divided into 11 levels, from Vocabulary 1 to Vocabulary 11. Have the child read the Chinese characters in the list. Please ignore the characters in parentheses.

If the student knows less than 50 percent of the characters in Vocabulary 1, we recommend Reading and Writing in Chinese Level 1. If the student knows more than 50 percent of the characters Vocabulary 1 but less than 50 percent in Vocabulary 2, the suggestion is Reading and Writing in Chinese Level 2. The same goes for levels 3-8. Currently there are no offerings higher than Level 8.

Step 3

If you are still not sure, contact Susan Chen to schedule an appointment with the instructor.
